NATIONAL DONUT DAY
Annually celebrated on the first Friday of June, National Donut Day was established by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honour The Salvation Army’s “Donut Lassies,” who served these delicious treats to soldiers during World War 1. Today marks the first day the crew of HMCS Fredericton will step off the ship since losing six service members in a tragic Cyclone helicopter crash in April. The Halifax-class frigate is to return home to Halifax after a six-month deployment overseas for Operation Reassurance, a NATO training mission. But the COVID-19 pandemic prevents family members and friends from welcoming the crew of more than 200 service members in person at the Halifax dockyard.
