Whitney Elizabeth Houston (August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012) was an American singer and actress. She is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with sales of over 200 million records worldwide. Her powerful and soulful vocal performances, as well as her prominence on the music charts, have inspired many other singers.

According to the RIAA, Houston is the top-selling R&B female artist of the 20th century.
In addition, until the launch of the RIAA’s digital certification program in 2004, she had sold more physical singles than any other female solo artist in history.

Houston released seven studio albums and two soundtrack albums, all of which have been certified diamond, multi-platinum, platinum, or gold.

She has been honored with numerous awards, including two Emmy Awards, eight Grammy Awards, 14 World Music Awards, 15 Guinness World Records, 16 Billboard Music Awards and 22 American Music Awards. Houston was inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020.

In 2008, Rolling Stone listed her among their “100 Greatest Singers of All Time”.
Houston was ranked at number three on VH1’s list of “50 Greatest Women of the Video Era” in 2003.
VH1 also ranked her among the “Top 100 Greatest Artists of All Time” and the “200 Greatest Pop Culture Icons of All Time”.
Houston’s entrance into the music industry is considered one of the “25 musical milestones of the last 25 years”, according to the USA Today in 2007.

On February 11, 2012, Houston was found dead at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. The coroner’s report showed that she had accidentally drowned in the bathtub, with heart disease and cocaine use as contributing factors. News of her death coincided with the 2012 Grammy Awards and was featured prominently in international media.
